The ribbons actually were fragile in comparison to the strength of the actual medals. Quite a contrast.

The week before the U.S. Grand Prix he vacationed with his family and rode his motorcycle in the western United States. Because of his world-wide fame, he would be mobbed by adoring fans in Europe. Here in the U.S., few people would recognize him so he enjoys more anonymity.
